CALVES

87 calves forward today at Lancaster with a great turnout of buyers and onlookers.
Taking centre stage today was a British Blue bull calf selling in aid of St Johns Hospice, following the passing of Rachel Standen. The calf bred by and originally donated by CR&A Baxter, Morecambe sold at a charity auction in September where it was bought by Phil Halhead on behalf of Norbreck Genetics who kindly donated the calf to be sold again today.
The calf sold for £850 to North West Auctions Andrew Butler, Matthew Probert and Will Rogerson, before it was sold again for £1000 to Mike Standen, with the £1000 kindly matched by James Lamb, Old Glasson. Thank you to anyone else who has kindly donated today, a sincere act of generosity.
Other bull calves saw a nice trade, however buyers more selective than earlier in the year, selling to £870 was an Aberdeen Angus from JS Towers & H Kent, Dolphinholme with British Blues to £850, £840 and £830 from Lawsons Dairy, Cockerham. Other British Blue bulls sold to £790 from JP&C Robson, Brock or £770 for RT Halhead, Cockerham. The youngest end saw three week old Aberdeen Angus to £360 from Ivan Slater, Brock with Black and Whites this week selling to £350 from J&R Waller, Killington.
Heifer calves sold to £780 for a British Blue from JS Towers & H Kent, Dolphinholme with Lawsons Dairy selling at £710 and £700. AD&RL Milner, Brock were close behind at £690 again for British Blues with Aberdeen Angus topping at £650 again from JS Towers & H Kent.
A handful of stirks sold to £1040 for a Limousin bull from F&TE Park, Crook with British Blue bulls from this home at £1000 and heifers at £940.

STORE CATTLE

Lancasters weekly sale of store cattle would see trade very similar on the week, with a few more weathered cattle on offer. Aberdeen Angus steers yet again were top of the leader board, this week from JS Clark & Sons, Catforth with their pair achieving £2580. Other Aberdeen Angus steers from the same good home achieved £2450. T Robson & Son, Singleton also sold Aberdeen Angus steer to £2400 for a pen of four. Loyal Lancaster supporter J Lamb, Old Glasson saw their five well farmed British Blue steers hit £2550, while a pair from M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling sold at £2500. Numerous other British Blue steers were over £2300. Simmental steers achieved £2300 from T&E Burrow, Slyne not far behind was Barlow Bros, Preston at £2250. A good show of Charolais steers sold to £2220 from MJ Waller, Lupton with others at £2000 for a pen of five from EE Thornton & Sons, Heaton with Oxcliffe. Hereford steers sold to £2150 from A&E Clarkson, Thurnham who also sold Limousin steers to £2250. Dairy bred steers saw Friesian to £2220 from R&DJ Holden, Cockerham other with Friesians from DJ Townley, Stodday to £2200. Plenty of other Friesians were over the £2000 barrier. A trio of Fleckvieh steers from H Birkett & Son, Overton sold to £2180. All steers today averaged £2151.
Store heifers sold to £2120 for Aberdeen Angus from EE Thornton & Sons, Heaton with Oxcliffe for a pair. Other Aberdeen Angus heifers sold to £2100 from DJ Townley, Stodday. British Blues to £2080 from R&DJ Holmes, Cockerham with other British Blues to £2050 from M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling. Plenty more British Blue were around the £1900 mark. Charolais heifers sold to £2080 from L Parson & Sons, Levens with others at £1980 for a trio from J Townley, Whittingham. Limousin heifers sold to £1920 from R&DJ Holmes, Cockerham. All heifers today averaged £1902.

OTM / CAST CATTLE

OTM continue to sell to remarkable levels at Lancaster.
Some impressive gross prices today, topping at £2940.25 (309.5p/kg) for a cast Aberdeen Angus bull from G Metcalfe & Son, Gressingham. Next at £2866.24 (344.5p/kg) was a Limousin cull cow from EJ Ward & Son, Nether Kellet. Fleckvieh cows to £2396 (299.5p/kg) from TN Pye & Partners, Lancaster. Black and Whites cows topped at £2260 (259.5p/kg) from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe with a seven year old Black and White cow to £2140.35 (254.5p/kg) from T Taylor, Woodplumpton.
Topping the pence per kilo was an OTM heifer from AT Burrow & Son reaching 374.5p/kg, with cows to 369.5p/kg from A&V&A Thornton, Cockerham. Black and Whites to 324.5p/kg from Richmond Hall with others at 299.5p/kg from A&MI Robinson, Orton. Any amount of Black and White cows were 220p/kg to 250p/kg, with the best 250p/kg to 280p/kg.
